Central Salford packs three building eras into one postcode, and wasps exploit all of them. Greengate, once the medieval heart of the town and now a cluster of residential towers, meets the Georgian and Victorian survivals along Chapel Street, which in turn give way to the glass and steel of the New Bailey office quarter across from Salford Central station. Threading through the middle runs the Irwell, whose banks, embankment trees and quiet walkways form a green corridor in an otherwise hard landscape. Queens work along that corridor every spring, and the buildings either side of it offer more nest sites than a first glance suggests.

Apartment blocks and balconies

The towers around Greengate Square and the blocks off Trinity Way generate our steadiest M3 work. Wasps find the slot where balcony decking meets the slab, the joints between cladding panels, and the rarely visited plant rooms and roof terraces on top. A colony above the twentieth floor behaves no differently to one in a suburban hedge; it simply gets discovered later, because nobody walks past it. If your balcony has developed a persistent line of traffic into one gap, that is a nest, and it can usually be dealt with from the balcony itself in under an hour.

Blocks bring one complication houses do not: the entry point often sits on communal fabric even though a single flat suffers the nuisance. The routine is well practised by now. We identify the entrance, treat it directly, and give the building manager a short written record of what was done and where. Whoever pays, the price stays £60.

Chapel Street and the older stock

The regeneration along Chapel Street left plenty of the old fabric standing, and the listed frontages, stone parapets, box gutters and blocked vents of the surviving Victorian buildings are classic cavity-nest territory. Sacred Trinity Church and its surrounding lanes mark the old town’s edge, and the railway arches and boundary walls running towards the river collect nests every season, particularly late in the summer. Businesses in the arches and along the street get the same fixed price as residents, and we hold back early-morning slots so treatment can happen before doors open. Office managers tend to call us when wasps start appearing in a stairwell or drifting through a window that faces the Irwell; a quick look at the external wall usually finds the entry within minutes.
