Worsley is unusually green for somewhere ten minutes from junction 13 of the M60. The village core around The Delph, Worsley Green and the Packet House is a conservation area with close to fifty listed buildings in it, and most of the land stretching west toward Boothstown is farmland, woodland or protected green belt, with the Worsley Greenway running through the middle of it. Mature trees press straight up against large houses here. That mix of heavy canopy, big roofs and open land on the doorstep gives queen wasps a very easy spring in M28.

Where we find nests in Worsley

• Soffits and bargeboards on the estate cottages. The black-and-white Bridgewater estate houses around the village and Barton Road have steep pitches, deep overhangs and a lot of decorative timber. Behind that timber sits a dry, sheltered void, and it is the site we treat most often in this postcode.
• Eaves shaded by trees in Worsley Woods and Broadoak. Where the canopy actually touches the roofline, a colony gets shelter and a short flight path to cover. The larger detached houses off Broadoak Road and Kempnough Hall Road come up year after year.
• Sheds, garages and log stores in Boothstown. The estates between Chaddock Lane and Leigh Road back onto open fields, and a shed roof nobody has opened since March is about as good as it gets from a wasp’s point of view.
• Boundary walls and outbuildings on the green-belt fringe. Old brickwork, air bricks and loose coping along Vicars Hall Lane and the lanes out toward Ellenbrook hide nests you would walk past a hundred times without seeing.
• Banks along the canal and the Loopline. The Bridgewater towpath from the Delph down to Boothstown Marina, and the cuttings of the Roe Green Loopline, hold ground nests in abandoned rodent burrows — worth knowing if that bank is the bottom of your garden.
• Exposed nests in hedging. Tree wasps and median wasps do not use cavities at all. Around Roe Green and Beesley Green they hang a grey paper nest in dense hedging or low branches, in full view.

Finding the exact entry point is our job, not yours, and August is a poor month to be up a ladder looking for it. A colony founded by one queen in spring is at full strength and at its most defensive from now until the first hard frosts. That covers the visit, the treatment itself, and a free return if anything is still flying after 48 hours. Nothing is added for a Sunday, for a Boothstown address rather than a village one, or for a nest three storeys up under a gable.

Bumblebee nests are £70, and in most cases we will tell you it is not worth doing. A bumblebee colony under a shed floor or in a compost heap dies out on its own by early autumn and will not come back to the same spot the following year. Treatment only makes sense where the nest is somewhere genuinely awkward, such as beside a front door. If what you have is a honeybee swarm we will say so as well, and a local beekeeper may collect it.
