Wasp Nest Removal Urmston

Urmston was farmland until the railway arrived in 1873, and most of what stands here today went up in the fifty years that followed. Walk the roads off Flixton Road, Davyhulme Road or Higher Road and you meet the same house again and again — a three-bed bay-fronted semi, red brick to the ground-floor sill with render or pebble-dash above, a gabled mock-Tudor front, and a side drive running back to a flat-roofed garage. It is sound, well-built inter-war stock. It also happens to be close to ideal for a queen wasp looking for somewhere dry to start a colony, which is why M41 produces more straightforward domestic soffit jobs than almost any other postcode we work in.

Where we find nests in Urmston

• Boxed soffit voids. The overhanging eaves on a 1930s semi are boxed in underneath with timber. Where those boards have shrunk back from the brick, or where uPVC cladding was fitted over the original timber and left a gap behind it, there is an insulated cavity a metre deep. This is the single most common nest position in Urmston.
• Gable apexes and mock-Tudor fronts. The render behind applied timber battens cracks and lifts over the best part of a century. Wasps take the split at the top of the gable and build back into the roof space. From the pavement you see them dropping in at the point of the roof.
• Bay roof junctions. Where the small tiled roof over the bay meets the main wall there is a flashing joint that opens with age. A nest here sits directly above a front bedroom window, so people usually notice it early.
• Side-drive garages. The felt roofs and timber fascias on the garages squeezed between semis on Crofts Bank Road, Grange Road and around the Woodsend estate take a lot of weather. A lifted felt edge is an open door.
• Air bricks and cavity walls. Inter-war cavities behind pebble-dash are reachable through a cracked or missing air brick at low level. An awkward spot to live with if you have children or a dog using the garden.
• Ground nests near the Mersey. Old rodent burrows along the embankment at Urmston Meadows, around the William Wroe course and behind the gardens that back onto the river hold German wasp colonies from late July onwards.
• Sheds, compost bins and hedges. Urmston back gardens are long. A nest in the ivy at the far end, or under a compost lid, often goes unnoticed until someone starts cutting back in August.

You do not have to work out the exact spot before you ring. Wasps run a steady two-way line into an entrance, so if you can point at the corner of the house they are using, that is enough for us to start from.
